Opinion on nursery set-up safety?
I’m 38 weeks pregnant and have had my nursery set up for a couple months but recently have read a lot about crib bumpers and that they are linked to SIDS which scares the heck out of me. Babies evidently have suffocated on them and they reportedly decrease the amount of fresh oxygen that gets in the crib. Now I’m thinking of taking it out.
How many of you plan on or are using a crib bumper and what are your thoughts?
I’m aware of the difference between SIDS and suffocation!!! On the American Academy of Pediatrics it is clearly stated that they are linked to SIDS. Other reputable websites too.

I used a bumper for a while but noticed my son liked to sleep against the rail once he was more mobile, so out it went. but once it was removed his arms and legs got stuck in the rail a lot lol, but he got over it and has no problems at all anymore. they have mesh bumpers at babiessrus which greatly reduces the risk of suffocation if you really want a bumper. but they arent that necessary. they keep the pacifier in the crib and keep the arms and legs from getting stuck but thats pretty much it. and some babies use bumpers as a step stool to try and climb out of the crib. never a good thing!

I found the baby center website to have some really helpful guidelines about how much to feed your baby and it is an age by age guide. The American Academy of Pediatrician's guide is very similar to this one.
Go with your baby's cues & it sounds like you are doing just that since your baby seems happy and full. She will let you know if you are not feeding her enough or when she is full. I know that can be tough! I never know if I'm feeding my baby too much or not enough, but I try to go by his cues (fussiness, etc.). Soon, your daughter will point to the food when she wants more! You can become an RN with two years of college, but I would recommend obtaining your BSN (4 years). Most maternity units and labor and delivery units require their RNs to have a minimum amount of experience (anywhere from a year on up…sometimes having the BSN degree will get you in sooner).
The names most frequently used are Labor and Delivery Nurse, Mother/Baby, Maternity Nurse, OB nurse – they deal w/delivering of the newborns and the care of the mother,
NICU, Pediatric, and Nursery Nurses deal only w/the newborns.
To get into the Newborn area, the best bet is to go to a school that has 1 semester of OB and 1 semester of Pediatrics. At my school I was able to pick what area I wanted to do my practicum (we spend about 2.5 months working on a unit of our choice). I worked in a Level II NICU. It was the best experience of schooling. Unfortunately, out in the "real world", NICU jobs are few and far between to come by. You have to work at a large hospital and limit yourself if you ever want to get out of pediatrics. I'm in my first job out of nursing school now and am working w/adults in postop orthopaedic surgery. it is okay, but I miss the newborns. A doctor once told me that working w/newborns is the most rewarding nursing avenue (and he doesn't work w/newborns so he is not biased).
